Afternoon at a Shelter

A joyful human connection.

“Joyeux Noël!” A young mother from Benin left us with this holiday greeting after spending the afternoon decorating a treasure chest for her infant daughter and a framed photo of herself with the baby.

The 7th-8th graders who went to the Family Service Shelter in Maplewood delighted in communicating with her across the language barrier, learning to take a better photo, holding babies, and helping little ones keep paint off their clothes.

They delivered nine boxes of supplies for the families who are lucky enough to move into apartments when their thirty days at the shelter end.  What they brought home: contented hearts and a memory of joyful human connection.2015-12-13 Shelter SUN
