After Katrina

The Lower 9th ward of New Orleans is a poor, working class, predominantly Black part of town. When the governor ordered everyone to evacuate the city as Hurricane Katrina came closer and closer, many 9th ward residents could not afford to leave. Some did not have a car, and couldn’t afford a bus ticket. Some had no one to stay with and couldn’t afford a hotel. Many people died in their homes or evacuated to the metrodome, where food and water were scarce, and part of the roof was torn away by wind, letting water pour in.

Brad Pitt started an organization called “Make It Right” to help 9th ward residents rebuild their community. The organization has built 109 sustainable houses so far, but there are still countless empty lots, houseless foundations, and boarded up houses. The community is still working to rebuild.
